McDonnell & Miller Receives Prestigious Environmental Leadership Awards

Chicago, IL-June 3, 1999-McDonnell & Miller, a unit of ITT Industries, recently received three very prestigious awards recognizing its leadership efforts in environmental and energy conservation excellence.
On May 3, 1999, the national environmental nonprofit group Renew America and President Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development awarded McDonnell & Miller a National Award for Sustainability in the category of Pollution Prevention. The awards are presented to a select few organizations nationwide that demonstrate leadership and excellence in integrating environmental, economic, and community sustainability. Only 24 organizations from 16 states were selected. “The Renew America awards celebrate the ways in which Americans are working together to protect public health and the environment and also demonstrate that a healthy environment and a growing economy really do go hand-in-hand,” lauded Carol Browner, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
“The winners were selected through a rigorous process from over 300 applicants who exemplify the ideals of cooperative, ‘can-do’ citizenship,” remarked Anna Slafer, Executive Director of Renew America. “Renew America and the President’s Council on Sustainable Development honor the people and programs that safeguard our environment and enhance our communities every day.”
Specifically, the award cites McDonnell & Miller for:
• The elimination of more than 13,200 gallons/year of 1,1,1, trichloroethane over the past five years, and converting to an aqueous cleaner;
• 58% reduction of mercury switches in manufactured boiler controls between 1993-1997 (a safer electronic switch is replacing the mercury switch in many applications);
• ISO 14001 certification and the fundamentally sound environmental management system in place at M&M;
• Receipt of a “No Further Remediation” letter from the Illinois EPA when the company voluntarily closed a 1,1,1 TCA impact of its soils and groundwater, developed a remedy, and closed the project.
This is the third time in the last several months McDonnell & Miller has been recognized for its outstanding environmental efforts. In March,
1999 the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s ISO 14001 Multistate Workgroup presented McDonnell & Miller with an Appreciation Award in recognition of the company’s participation as a member of the ISO 14001/EMS Pilot Project in Illinois.
This award came closely on the heels of receiving the coveted 12th Annual Governor’s (Illinois) Pollution Prevention Award in October, 1998. This prestigious award is bestowed on a very select group of organizations in Illinois that have successfully reduced the generation of wastes and other toxic chemicals.
On a more global basis, McDonnell & Miller has also received certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for Environmental Management System Standard 14001 in November 1997. At that time, McDonnell & Miller became the first company in Illinois and only the 55th company in the United States to comply with the enhanced environmental standard.
“Receiving these awards and qualifying for ISO 14001 is a proud accomplishment for McDonnell & Miller and all its employees,” said Robert Dvorak, McDonnell & Miller General Manager. “We take great pride in providing a safe environment for our community.”
