Bell & Gossett was founded in 1916 by two young engineers, Earl J. Gossett and Wakeman C. Bell, for the purpose of manufacturing and selling case hardening compounds used in the steel industry. In 1919, Bell & Gossett bought and reorganized the Case Hardening Company of Cleveland. Mr. Bell moved to Cleveland to manage the new company, while E.J. Gossett remained with the parent company in Chicago where the focus shifted to HVAC-related products. During the war years, B&G manufactured tank pins, feed water heaters, evaporator-distillers and fuel oil heaters for the Coast Guard and Maritime Division in addition to its standard product offering, and in 1945 Bell & Gossett was awarded the Army-Navy "E" for excellence of performance for its work accomplished during the war.
