Another Short History Lesson: B&G in the 1930's
|
|
|
The Great Depression began in 1929 and lasted until about 1939. It was the longest and most severe
depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world. Bell & Gossett weathered the depression
fairly well. B&G remained profitable except for one year in the early '30's.
During the depression, the manufacturers of hot air heating systems developed forced circulation of air,
which seriously threatened to reduce the sale of boilers, radiators and pipe used in steam systems. The
development of specialties for control of hot water systems - including those by B&G - essentially saved the
boiler and radiator industry.
In 1933, B&G began the manufacture of all kinds of tanks at 30th and Halsted Streets in Chicago and
expanded its product line to include Viscostat, Water Mixers, Built-in Heaters and Regulators.
In 1935, B&G added a special type of relief valve, reducing valves, and a relief/reducing
valve combination (sound familiar?). There were two combinations of tanks and valves known as the D&T
Simplex System and D&T Self-Filling System.
